Greek entablature was made up of these elements: the cornice, frieze and architrave. The entablature sat on top of the capital and was proportioned according to the" Order" in which it was made (see columns).

The architrave represents the "lintel" section of the "post and lintel" wood frame of earlier buildings. The Greeks formalized this technology into beautiful works of architectural art. The columns represent the "post" portion of the "post and lintel" system.
